This is episode 240 of You, Me, and BTC – your liberty and Bitcoin podcast.
Did you read all of that last paragraph? We're not just a Bitcoin podcast. We're also a *liberty* podcast. So in addition to Bitcoin, we take serious interest in privacy, security, censorship resistance, free trade, and numerous other liberty-oriented topics. We've covered all that since the beginning.
This week we have some good news and some bad news on those fronts. First up, the bad news: Amazon recently decided to disable Signal's ability to resist censorship in countries that have blocked the secure messaging app. The trick is called "domain fronting," and it allows services to run on high-profile domain names owned by companies like Amazon and Google. So if a nation wanted to block Signal, they'd also have to block those big companies and most of the internet. And most countries aren't willing to go quite that far.
Unfortunately, Amazon learned that Signal was using this trick and called it some kind of impersonation. They threatened to cut off services to Signal if the practice continued. We'll share all the details and Signal's response during tonight's stream.
Then later in the show, we'll get to the good news. Samourai Wallet released some updates today with several new and improved privacy features. With names like bech32, STONEWALL, and Ricochet, these tools have to be good. We loved learning about Samourai during last week's BIP70 debate, so we're excited to chat more about this wallet's Bitcoin vision.
Check the list below for some of the specific stories we'll cover and catch the livestream tonight at 9PM Eastern!
